Colonscopy
At Perth Gastroenterology and Liver Centre, our doctors perform hundreds of diagnostic and interventional colonoscopies every year, ensuring expert care and precision.
What is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a vital procedure used to examine the large intestine (colon and rectum) using a colonoscope—a flexible tube with a small camera and light attached. This procedure allows for a detailed view of the colon’s interior, enabling the detection of inflamed tissue, ulcers, and abnormal growths.
Why is a Colonoscopy Performed?
Colonoscopy is a key tool in diagnosing and monitoring a variety of conditions, including:
- Early signs of colorectal cancer
- Bowel disorders
- Abdominal pain
- Muscle spasms
- Inflamed tissue
- Ulcers
- Anal bleeding
- Unexplained weight loss
How is the Procedure Done?
The colonoscopy procedure is performed under sedation to ensure patient comfort. Here’s what to expect:
- Preparation: Before the procedure, the colon must be completely clean. This involves following specific dietary restrictions and taking a prescribed laxative.
- Insertion: The colonoscope is gently inserted into the rectum and carefully advanced through the colon to the cecum (the junction of the small and large intestine).
- Examination: As the colonoscope is slowly withdrawn, the camera provides a clear, real-time view of the colon’s lining on a large screen. This allows the doctor to identify any abnormalities, such as polyps or inflamed areas.
- Intervention: If polyps or abnormal growths are found, they can be removed during the procedure. These samples are then sent to a laboratory for further analysis, including cancer detection.
Benefits of Colonoscopy
- Accurate Diagnosis: Colonoscopy offers an immediate and precise diagnosis for many colon conditions, with greater sensitivity than X-ray imaging.
- Early Detection: Early identification of colorectal cancer and other serious conditions significantly increases treatment success rates.
- Therapeutic Capabilities: The ability to remove polyps during the procedure reduces the risk of cancer development and eliminates the need for additional surgical procedures.
Post-Procedure Care
After the procedure, patients are monitored as the sedative wears off. Most can return home the same day, but it’s advisable to arrange for someone to drive you home. Mild cramping or bloating is common but typically resolves quickly. Detailed post-procedure care instructions will be provided by our medical team.
